COMMUNITY ELIGIBILITY PROVISION

The Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) is a non-pricing meal service option for schools and school districts in low-income areas. Charleston CUSD #1 schools qualified for this program back in 2022, and it has continued ever since then. For more information about this program, please visit: https://www.fns.usda.gov/cn/community-eligibility-provision

FREE AND REDUCED MEALS

Under the CEP program, ALL Charleston CUSD#1 students automatically qualify for free meals. You can still fill out the financial waiver application to have other school fees waived.

PURCHASES AND PAYMENTS

Our computerized point-of-sale system makes managing your child’s lunch account easier than ever. Your child’s account is completely maintained in the system, including cash on account and purchasing history that you can access.

Making payments is easy! You can deposit money on your child’s account by sending a check or cash to school with your student. Checks are the preferred method of payment. If you would like to learn more about e-Funds for schools or make an online payment to add money to your student's meal account, click on the links below.

BREAKFAST

We realize that morning can be hectic. Let us worry about breakfast so you don’t have to! Charleston Food Service has a breakfast program in all 6 of our schools. Students will be able to purchase breakfast upon their arrival and start the day off right by eating their most important meal of the day: a nutritious breakfast. Studies show that students who eat breakfast perform better in the classroom and on standardized tests, and have fewer behavioral problems in the classroom. So let us help your student start the day off right with breakfast

LUNCH

Charleston Food Service offers a high quality lunch program to its students with lots of options available. At Ashmore, Mark Twain and Carl Sandburg there are 4 entrees to choose from daily. 8-10 entrée choices are offered daily at the high school, middle school and Jefferson Elementary School. An array of healthy fresh fruits and vegetables are offered daily at all locations. With our many options there is always something for everyone!

At Ashmore, Mark Twain and Carl Sandburg Elementary School, students select their entrees at the beginning of the school day. This helps Charleston Food Service control costs to keep meal prices low. It is important that students make every effort to take the same entrée during lunch that they selected in their classroom in the morning. Kitchen staff prepares entrees based on morning student lunch counts. When students “switch” entrees it increases the likelihood that the kitchen will run out of selections for students at the end of the lunch line. We always prepare a little extra of each just in case, but if too many students change their minds, somebody may get shorted.

At the upper grade levels including Jefferson Elementary School, lunch counts are not taken. This can makes it bit more difficult to produce the proper amount of each entrée. At these locations the kitchen staff tries their very best to have all entrée choices available throughout the entire lunch service period.

OFFER VS. SERVE

Charleston Schools utilizes an Offer vs. Serve (OVS) meal system. The system is designed to decrease food waste and give students greater flexibility in choosing what to eat for school breakfast or lunch. Under this system: at lunch students must take at least 3 of the 5 components of the meal (the minimum under Federal program regulations; students may take smaller portions of the declined food items; the meal must be priced as a unit (i.e. a students who takes 3, 4, or 5 components of the meal, or smaller portions of some components, pays the same price).

SNACK AND BEVERAGE SALES

Currently Charleston Food Service sells a variety of snacks and beverages a la carte at Jefferson Elementary School and at the middle and high school age level. A limited amount of beverages and/or snacks are available at the younger age level. In addition to a well-balanced meal, students in those buildings may purchase snack items during breakfast and lunch. Snacks are offered as a supplement to student lunches, not as an alternative to a nutritious meal. Beverage and snack prices range from $.25 to $2.00. Milk and juice is offered for .40 so if your student brings a lunch from home, he/she is welcomed to purchase a milk or juice to go with their lunch. All of the ala carte snacks and beverage products offered meet USDA guidelines. If you prefer that your student not purchase these items, click here for the Ala Carte Restriction Form and fill out the form. After completion, please send the form to your school office.
