CMS wants to give a HUGE thank you to Mattoon Walmart for their generous donation of school supplies to our students. We truly appreciate it.
This week, CMS 7th graders discussed how our country came together and was unified after the events of September 11, 2001. We had conversations on just how all of us, who remember that day, will never forget where we were nor how we felt. Our 7th graders were able to make great connections of that day with the challenges we face today. CMS 7th graders are resilient, patient, respectful and eager to interact and learn. Please take time to share your 9/11 experiences with your families. You are a primary source to that moment in history.

IESA Update:
Parents,
In accordance with the DCEO, the IESA has changed their guidelines concerning face masks worn by spectators during outdoor events. Starting today, spectators no longer have to wear a face covering while watching an outdoor event; as long as they continue to follow the social distancing guidelines (maintain a distance of 6 ft.) Players not participating must continue to wear a face mask, as do coaches.

CMS Orientation and Material Distribution
Dear Families,
Charleston Middle School has scheduled CMS orientation and material distribution for Friday, August 28th from 8:00-3:15 and Monday, August 31st from 8:45-3:15 and 5:00-7:00 P.M. Utilizing your Skyward account, you will sign up for a 30 minute time slot. Each time slot will only allow for five students to sign up. For each team orientation, there will only be 10 people and the team of teachers. Students will receive a computer, school materials, schedule, and receive a brief orientation about CMS from his/her team teachers.
In order to minimize the number of people in the building, we ask that only one parent and the student attend the orientation and materials distribution. Upon arrival, we ask 8th grade parents to enter through the main entrance, Door 3, and the 7th grade parents through the front main entrance on the West side of the office which is Door 1. There will be staff out front to guide you to the correct doors. In order to provide safety, we will ask that you wait outside until your chosen time nears. Upon entering the building, face coverings are required and a temperature and screening will take place. Before meeting with the team, we will direct families to the gym to talk to Physical Education and Exploratory teachers. Once your selected time is available, we will direct you to the designated team meeting areas, in which the teams will begin their 30 minute orientation. In order to meet with all students, we ask that you respect the 30 minute time frame. If you have unanswered questions at the end of the orientation, you are welcome to reach out to individual teams and teachers by email or phone to have your questions answered.
Once parents are finished with their orientation, we will ask that you exit through the 7th and 8th grade doors on the East side of the building.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at 639-6000. Please follow the following steps to register for a time slot:
1) Login to your Family Skyward account
2) Click on conferences on the left-hand side.
3) Click all conferences
4) Both teams from the grade level will come up, select the correct team and then select a time

Attention all 6th 7th & 8th grade girls and boys! Cross Country practice is set to begin on Monday August 10th at 7:30am at Charleston Middle School. Cross Country is a no-cut sport and any interested students are encouraged to give it a try. No experience is necessary. Newcomers are brought along gradually and carefully. Our teams compete hard, but also have a great deal of fun playing games and making new friends. Monday is primarily an information day but we will get in a short workout weather permitting. If there are storms we will meet for about 30 minutes inside to discuss the first few weeks of practice and to hand out paper work to anyone who needs it. Athletic packets can be picked up in advance at the CMS office. Students Please drop off and pick up your athletes in the west horseshoe parking lot of CMS. Bring a water bottle!
We hope a bunch of you might be brave enough to try something new. Cross Country is a really fun and exciting sport.
