Last week in JES Science Club we had 2 experiments. One was to observe capillary action (how colored water eventually colors the flower petals). The other was, we had our first social science experiment: trading dum-dums and understanding how trade creates value. #jeffersoncusd1

Ms. Hutton and Miss Coartney's preschool class celebrated crazy sock day today as part of their Dr. Seuss week. Students were also able to enjoy showing off their socks by having the opportunity to take off their shoes while in the classroom! #jeffersoncusd1
Last week in the JES Science Club we created beautiful, marbled paper cards. We learned that shaving cream is both water loving (hydrophilic) and water repelling (hydrophobic), and food coloring (water loving molecules) on top of shaving cream creates a marbling effect. The food coloring will only soak into the shaving cream when we add water. #jeffersoncusd1

Mrs. Buescher’s 6th grade classes participated in a Martin Luther King Jr. escape game. Out of 8 groups, 6 escaped! Both classes also colored squares to create a unique mural!

On Thursday the JES Science Club built a mini-LED lightsaber. Then, the challenge was to build a double mini-LED lightsaber. We learned about closing circuits and how electricity moves. As expected, mini battles occurred and lots of fun was had! #jeffersoncusd1

Last Thursday in JES Science Club we built catapults from popsicle sticks, rubber bands, and plastic spoons. We learned about Newton's First Law and how elastic potential energy changes into kinetic energy. We used pompoms and kept the mess to a minimum and the fun to maximum! #jeffersoncusd1
Some JES classes hosted Chris Horsley to speak with them on Spina Bifida. She was born with this disability 49 years ago. 6th grade students have been reading a book titled Out of My Mind, which is about a girl with Cerebral Palsy. 6th grade also completed some research on different disabilities mentioned in our book and presented power point presentations on these disabilities. Chris said, "one way I overcame frustrations in life was by trying things people said I couldn't do. You will never know what you can do if you don't try." #jeffersoncusd1

JES students recently participated in a Leader in Me Door decorating challenge. The challenge was to synergize as a class and decorate their classroom doors with a Leader in Me theme. We received 100% participation in the Challenge. GREAT JOB, STUDENTS!

Jefferson Elementary School Student Lighthouse Team members hosted an event this morning, showcasing the various ways in which they learn and lead every day to several members of the Charleston community. They all did an excellent job in their individual roles representing JES!
