The Charleston Rotary Club recognized this year’s winners of the Jefferson Rotary Youth Leadership Award at its May 16th meeting. Club Community Service Director Rick Hunt listed some of the characteristics that students possess to be nominated, including initiating service projects, respecting and understanding others, demonstrating helpfulness, setting goals, and being accountable. He also recognized selection committee members and introduced Club Interact Sponsor and Jefferson Elementary School Principal Rob Ulm to introduce the awardees and praise their contributions to their school, community and fellow students. Last Thursday was our last day of the JES Science Club. We built bristlebots that move! We used toothbrush heads, batteries, and a vibrating module. Lots of fun in our engineering lesson! Some kids built double-bots engineering marvels! #jeffersoncusd1

A few JES students visited Carl Sandburg today to see axolotls, which are an endangered species. The axolotls are on loan from EIU. These students recently wrote informational papers about endangered animals. They learned about how they can regenerate body parts and how they are being studied by researchers to learn more about how body parts can be regenerated. Mrs Lynn’s third grade students at CSES were also able to join us. Students were able to feed the axolotls and then participate in some learning activities. #jeffersoncusd1

Last week in JES Science Club we had 2 experiments. One was to observe capillary action (how colored water eventually colors the flower petals). The other was, we had our first social science experiment: trading dum-dums and understanding how trade creates value. #jeffersoncusd1
