Our Charleston Joint PTA Food 4 Kids Backpack Program provides children at risk of hunger with bags of food they can take home for the weekend. The PTA distributes over 300 bags per week to Charleston students. To supplement their program, JES students are holding a food drive for the next 2 weeks. The JES Girls’ Basketball League had another exciting season. The regular season records had the Red Team (5 wins, 1 loss), Dark Blue Team (3 wins, 3 loss) and the Light Blue Team with (1 win, 5 losses). The surprising game of the year was when the Light Blue team upset the Red 16-14 as Daysha Hughes hit two 3 pointers to seal the victory. The Red Team had a balanced attack as both grades contributed to their success. Mariah Banks and Sika Banini led the 6th grade while Emma Dietrich led the 5th grade in scoring.
The Championship game was played on Monday, November 20 in front of the entire school, family and friends. The Red Team once again showed their dominance as they won 16-6. They jumped out quickly by outscoring the Dark Blue Team 10-2 in the 1st quarter. Sika Banini led the scoring as she scored 6 points. The Dark Blue Team made a small comeback in the second half as Annie Porter scored four quick points, but the Red Team had too much of a lead and prevailed.
The fans were entertained by the Jefferson 5th and 6th grade choir singing of the National Anthem and the Jefferson Band playing two songs at the halftime break. #jeffersoncusd1

Last week in JES Science Club we learned to build a beam bridge using straws and tape, then turn it into a suspension bridge using strings. As expected, the suspension bridge was stronger, as measured by the 'buckets' filled with marbles it could hold. #jeffersoncusd1

Last week in the JES Science Club we learned about gravity and how drag can slow down a falling object. So, we built a parachute or two and we tested how it works! A toy without a parachute falls harder and faster than the same toy attached to a parachute due to the air trapped by the parachute! #jeffersoncusd1
Last week in JES Science Club we learned how to build and close a paper circuit. LEDs were light up, designs were created, struggles were overcome! We learned that electricity can travel from the small battery, through the copper tape, to the LED and back only if the circuit is closed, and that polarity matters! We created a parallel circuit with multiple LEDs and noticed that different colored LEDs light up with different light intensity. Fun was had by all! #jeffersoncusd1
Our JES staff enjoyed dressing up in costume for the Fall Parade. Our 4th grd teachers dressed up as Barbie & Ken, our 5th grd teachers dressed up as Grammer Police, our 6th grd teachers dressed up as Disney characters and our principals dressed up as runners. #jeffersoncusd1

Last week in the JES Science Club we had fun building Geodesic Domes using toothpicks and gummy candy or mini marshmallows. A geodesic dome is a sphere-like structure made up of interconnecting triangles. We ended up with strong structures that use little building materials. Using the existing materials any other way to build structures resulted in weak and messy buildings. (We had to try!) #jeffersoncusd1
